Gold Analysis

Gold is the most misunderstood major asset in financial markets. It has no earnings, no yield and no cash flow, which means the valuation methods that work for equities have no equivalent here. What it does have is a small number of drivers that explain most of its movement — and a great deal of commentary that ignores them.

This section covers gold through those drivers rather than through price predictions.

What we focus on

Real yields. We compare gold with the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis series for the 10-Year Treasury Inflation-Indexed Security yield to identify the inflation-adjusted Treasury measure used in our analysis. The series defines the yield being compared; it does not establish that a yield move caused a gold move or that the relationship will remain stable.

The US dollar. We compare gold with the Federal Reserve's Nominal Broad U.S. Dollar Index to identify the broad dollar measure used in our analysis. The series defines that comparison measure; co-movement or divergence does not by itself establish causality or a fixed inverse relationship.

Central-bank reserves. Monetary gold is one category of official reserve assets in the IMF statistical framework. Reserve gold is valued at the current market price, so a change in reported value is not automatically evidence of a change in physical holdings. We use the IMF's International Reserves and Foreign Currency Liquidity guidance as context, not as a short-term XAU/USD signal.

Positioning and flows. The CFTC's Commitments of Traders reports provide a weekly breakdown of each Tuesday's open interest for reportable futures and options markets. We use them to describe the distribution of reported positions by published category; the reports do not disclose the specific reasons for positions and are not a price forecast.

These datasets describe different parts of the market and update on different schedules. None is a forecast by itself; each claim should be dated, sourced and read with its reporting lag.

How we approach it

Every analysis here states its mechanism and identifies what would prove it wrong. We publish directional views, but we try to publish them in the only form we consider defensible: with the reasoning visible, the invalidation level named, and the assumptions made explicit rather than hidden.

We do not publish price targets without explaining the model behind them, and we treat any analysis that cannot survive being wrong in public as marketing rather than analysis.

Who this is for

Readers who want to understand why gold moves rather than be told where it is going. If you are looking for signals or entry prices, this is not the right section — and our disclaimer explains why we do not offer them.
